No More Butterfly

Yesterday Ella had her Butterfly (aka Palate Expander) removed.  She did not enjoy the process.  But, who can blame her... they had to work on her mouth to get the pieces out and then had to create a mold for her new retainer.  She didn't like the feeling of pressure when they pulled out the expander.  Its been a year so it came out in pieces.  And Ella decided to keep the pieces... LOL

After that was out, they smoothed Ella's teeth some.  She is really particular and quite anal about her teeth but did a great job of showing them where it was still bugging her.

The goop for the mold was pretty gross I guess because that was the worst of it for Miss E.  She had me, Elizabeth, the Dentist and two of the Assistants trying to comfort her and help hold down legs and arms.  Elizabeth was a great comfort to her sister and a blessing to have with.  Thankfully it didn't take long for the goop to set and out of Ella's mouth.

Then we had a break of an hour while the form set up so they could create the retainer.  In that time the girls did crafts and had treats.

When they called us back in, it fit great and a little more of that yucky glue and its all set.  Ella did ask for gum when we got in the car.  Its been a long time for her with no gum. :-)

They did say that Ella may need another expander when she goes through another growth spurt.  Her upper jaw is still a little behind the lower jaw but it has moved quite a bit.

Good job Ella and thank you Elizabeth for being so sweet today!

Craft time.  Ella was not in the mood for pictures yet.

Still not too happy with it all.

Ella you are such a brave girl, I am so proud of you.

That goop for the mold is disgusting. I had to have that for braces YEARS ago and I still remember it.

Wow, that is amazing to see the difference in the before and after pictures!

I think Shea will need something like that eventually....the doctor has even mentioned the possibility of breaking her upper jaw and then resetting it...yikes!

Ella reminds me so much of my Shea!!
